The saying of the same thing twice over in different words, generally considered to be a fault of style; a phrase or expression in which the same thing is said twice in different words; a statement that is true by necessity or by virtue of its logical form. Derived from the Greek word tautologos which means ‘repeating what has been said’, from tauto- (same) + -logy (explanation, account., narrative).

Although considered as a fault in logic, language and writing due to redundancy, tautology is employed in writing to add rhythmic composition and humorous style - ex: it is what it is, boys will be boys. In Mathematics, a tautology is a logical compound statement, which results in a true statement, regardless of individual statements. The opposite of tautology is called contradiction or fallacy.
