  1. There are two concepts touched by that comment. First, the artistic version, where the calming helps to broaden focus and frees a writer. Second, an actually silent mind is one that is a result of trauma and abuse. It is the result of severe psychological damage and can take years to overcome, but the side effect is bounds of intelligence in other, less common areas. A different way of thinking--and in some, an insatiable need to write in order to explore one's own thoughts and emotions...to discover "Self." I've survived the latter. I've dabbled in the former. Writers are amazing human beings. Keep up the good work, and keep exploring words and ideas!
